The Sealey Challenge, but make it ASTRO✨
& a gentle reminder that the half-ass sealey challenge is valid!!
Every August poets go bonkers for the Sealey Challenge
What is the Sealey Challenge?
a community
challenge to read
one book of poetry a day
for the month of august
The Sealey Challenge website goes on to say they encourage reading new books and rereading old favorites. Cute!
Honestly, reading poetry consistently is really inspiring for all creatives. Reading good poetry helps beget good poetry. When I’m on a poetry reading roll I find I take more chances with language. It stretches my brain or something??
In the spirit of a little bit of poetry a day, I present to y’all -
I wanted to bring my faves (astrology and creative writing) together and offer an astrological take on the Sealey Challenge! I’ll pop in a few times this month with round ups of poetry lines that embody the signs.
My hopes for this offering:
you feel seen, no matter your birth chart
you find a new poem or poet you love
you learn something kinda deep about yourself
because that’s what poetry does. It drives us toward inner exploration. The language captures us, the subject matter makes us feel less alone. Poetry inspires us to connect with ourselves and each other. It whittles away the things that keep us far apart. I love reading poetry because it feels like I’ve crawled right into a poet’s brain. In a very appreciative, curious, and non creepy way.
A Gentle Reminder 💌
One thing about me is I don’t bullshit myself. Last year, I found myself reeeeallllyy wanting to do the Sealey Challenge. A few of my pffs (poetry friends forever) had done it. It’s such a fun thing to immerse yourself in something in community (somewhat comparative to the camaraderie of the midnight movie showings of yore). August 2023 I was freaking out about ‼️ my kid going into kindergarten ‼️ freaking out about my chapbook coming out in September ‼️ and freaking out about teaching my first writing workshop ‼️
There was no way. A book a day wasn’t gonna happen. I decided to rip shame out by the root and reframe it. Whence, the Half-ass Sealey Challenge was born. I wanted to participate and I knew I was going to fall short and decided to celebrate it all anyway.
